I agree with your statement that not all want company. I think the level of socialness he has right now is enough for him. Perhaps he just doesn't want to deal with drama. :-)

I love how Gem is gentle with the smaller critters around the barn. Even the wild turkeys know that he's not an enemy. :-) I am a little embarrassed about that picture with Gem and the dog. Gem had had a lovely mud bath that day and I was choking on the dust when I tried to brush the mud out. I eventually gave up. If you look closely you can still encrusted mud on his neck. :-)Wolfiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04743943656869294788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766983761847636077.post-61656312805957334142014-11-14T11:11:56.325-05:002014-11-14T11:11:56.325-05:00To be honest, GHM, it was hard for me not to take ...To be honest, GHM, it was hard for me not to take Gem's behaviour personally so I sort of understand where the owner was coming from. :-) But, you are absolutely correct - horses beat each other up all the time whether it's in fun or not. Some of the goings on can be scarey, but like you said they work it out.

DH's Mom decided to try him out with the herd this year, instead of being in a turnout area with Gem. It's the first time in his life he has not be in a confined area. So he's living the life wandering around 75 acres of grass, orchard and forest. :-)Wolfiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04743943656869294788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766983761847636077.post-52632154226414078322014-11-13T11:12:21.320-05:002014-11-13T11:12:21.320-05:00This sort of made me smile, reminds me of children...This sort of made me smile, reminds me of children deciding the pecking order in their own groups, and how precious some of the mothers are about it ;)

I love Gem's personality - a guy who knows his own mind! And doesn't beat around the bush about it - Yeah! And why oh why did that horse's owner take it personally and not speak to you?? Has no one told her that horses, like all animals, are independent-minded creatures? Poor love ... ;) But {HUGS} for you, that couldn't have been nice at all, and we do take it to heart, don't we, what our critters/kids do.

Well, I'm no expert but I think just because horses are classed 'herd animals', it doesn't mean that ALL of them want company. The same with people - they are different levels of 'being social', and there is no right or wrong choice. And with the dogs and cats, it sounds as if Gem has decided the type of company he'd rather have. Love that picture with the dog - Gem is way too adorable and cute! Then again, I don't think you could take a 'bad' picture of Gem even if you tried ;) xxJoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18058665356922189006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766983761847636077.post-61177548340087318612014-11-12T13:20:51.110-05:002014-11-12T13:20:51.110-05:00Gem has a definite personality. My daughter has had a horse for the past 23 years (Mellon) who was nick-named "the terminator" at boarding barns because of his bad behavior with horses who weren't in his herd. People have even asked to "borrow" him and his attitude to straighten a horses' behavior out in other paddocks. He was always willing to show everyone who was boss. That said, he is the horse who I am most comfortable with on the ground, he has wonderful manners with humans. He loves kids and dogs etc. Just don't step on his toes if you're a horse who can't take direction.

I find it hard to believe that the owner would not speak to you and took it personally that Gem had a go round with her horse. You couldn't control the situation and it wasn't your fault. Horses beat up on each other all the time even when they are at play. You should see Sami and Grady rearing at carrying on at times. They are playing but they could get hurt. I'm not getting in the middle of their play-fighting either, I let them figure it out.

I must have missed something but why were DH and Gem separated to different paddocks if they got along? Seems if he stayed there then his paddock would open up for the winter horses to double up in. Anyway, he sounds like he's totally fine by himself and his dog and cat companions.

Gem is adorable with the dog. What a cute picture. I think he's a sweetheart.Grey Horse Mattershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05837575441967937196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766983761847636077.post-84809024269971043272014-11-12T11:24:26.387-05:002014-11-12T11:24:26.387-05:00I totally agree, Terry. The behaviour that Reggie has towards canines is the same as the majority of horses at LA's. Can't blame them....hunter and prey thought process. When I see him being brought in from turnout by a slight 13-year old, he can't be all bad. :-)

It is so cute to see the dog and Gem interact! I didn't realize that it was special until LA explained how the other horses do not like the dog and have actually injured him!Wolfiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04743943656869294788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766983761847636077.post-90173546492414117442014-11-11T20:33:56.040-05:002014-11-11T20:33:56.040-05:00Don't feel bad. He's tried to kill coyotes, and they've learned to go around his pasture, not through. We've had him since he was 2, he's always been treated well, but he's one tough son of a gun. Horses have personalities, just like people do.Terryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13944121836337072178noreply@blogger.com
