He was around 1300 lbs last time I taped him, which I didn't think was bad considering the weight range goes up to 1400....which he was when I first got him! I hope the new routine helps both of us. :-)Wolfiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04743943656869294788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766983761847636077.post-7875519120415261202014-10-09T09:51:37.376-04:002014-10-09T09:51:37.376-04:00Ah...the "easy keeper". She gets 1/4 cup of grain with her breakfast and dinner. It's a ridiculously small amount of concentrate for a 1250 pound horse and she's surely a little...um..."chubby".

I even took to calling her "Jumbo" over the summertime.

I just can't work her enough...ltdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15420250818448361372noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766983761847636077.post-83869143066435204432014-10-08T13:48:53.752-04:002014-10-08T13:48:53.752-04:00I am at least a "7". :-)

I really thought the mare with the big belly (hay belly) was over-weight, but in fact you could feel her ribs.

The clinic will give me something to look forward to as deep winter sets in....shiver, shiver.....

Wolfiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04743943656869294788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766983761847636077.post-42451480519159661992014-10-08T12:54:30.850-04:002014-10-08T12:54:30.850-04:00Dread to think what my score would be ;) It is sc...Dread to think what my score would be ;) It is scary complicated, working out a horse's feed/nutrition - that was top of my list too, when I was thinking about getting a horse, that it be an 'easy keeper'.

Such a good idea, to have the feed rep come in and, not just give a talk, but to examine the horses as well. Gem looks great, as usual :) And now you have a 'plan' to go forward with. The cowboy clinic sounds like something you and Gem would have fun at - I vote you guys should do it :) xxJoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18058665356922189006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766983761847636077.post-84402617697840167682014-10-08T10:38:57.829-04:002014-10-08T10:38:57.829-04:00Hi Judi. The history articles I have read about Canadians indicated that in the 1800's, thousands were shipped to the US annually and used in the Civil War and for pulling stage coaches, etc. Their history does mention that they helped develop the Morgan, American Saddlebred and the Standardbred. :-)

Dimples on his crest??! Wow. What a transformation. I would be curious to know how long it took you to get Cole to the desired weight.Wolfiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04743943656869294788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766983761847636077.post-55211025266244520922014-10-08T10:26:28.935-04:002014-10-08T10:26:28.935-04:00Thanks, Allison! :-) Nutrition is soooo complica...Thanks, Allison! :-) Nutrition is soooo complicated! I had no idea. But you know, I think it's better to have a bit too much than not enough. I totally agree with you about having extra weight as we head into winter. I watched part of the clinic last year and really what it is is building trust between you and your horse through obstacle challenges like bridges, water, flapping flags, etc. It looked like a lot of fun, but loping is involved!! We have the same problems. Cole is only 75% Morgan, but the rest is Arabian--another easy keeper. When I got him--he was hugely obese. His neck was so thick that his crest had dimples and wrinkles in it! He is now a completely different horse--and seems so much happier--in spite of not being able to eat all day long.Judihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01696430372464786833noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8766983761847636077.post-38879878707652853322014-10-08T10:19:16.425-04:002014-10-08T10:19:16.425-04:00I think he looks good, too. :-) I had never cons...I think he looks good, too. :-) I had never considered that being an easy keeper still requires some monitoring!
