These horses, called The Nobles, are just so beautiful that I had to do a quick post about them. My father hails from Maberly, Newfoundland and a co-worker, who also originates from Newfoundland, thought I might be interested in a recent CBC Land and Sea program on the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary mounted unit. You can feel the officers' bond with their beautiful mounts. One officer has actually postponed his normal retirement date so that he can retire when his horse does, so that he has the opportunity to take his horse with him.
I have to tell you, my eyes widened when I watched this female officer mount her 17+hh horse from the ground.....it's around the 6 minute mark of the program. Wow.For me it was wonderful to hear that familiar accent that I find so musical, and always with a smile behind it. If you have a few minutes, take a peak. You will absolutely feel the love. :-)

ReplyDeleteMy Erik was 17-2 and I could not get on him from the ground...ever.I'm 5'5, but my daughter could do it she is around 5-10 with no problem when she was younger.
ReplyDeleteWe once had a little boy around 10 want to ride Erik, really bad. My daughter told him if he could get on from the ground he could. Well that kid climbed up the stirrup leathers and pulled himself onto the saddle. Of course, once he was up there and saw how far down the ground was he wanted off right away. But in a cool little boy kid way, he wasn't scared or anything...

ReplyDeleteI actually hate when I have to mount from the ground and use blocks even when getting on ponies. Mounting from the ground puts a lot of torque on your horse and the saddle, especially if you mount from the same side all the time.
I don't go for the notion that you have to mount from the ground to be a "real" rider, I feel the exact opposite.

ReplyDeleteShannon - I have to admit that I sometimes cringe when I see some riders mount from the ground. I can see the need to learn and be able to mount from the ground as an emergency measure, like when I fell off out on the trails. But, I agree with you. I think mounting blocks are kinder to your horse. I actually take my saddle off Gem from his right side, just so his back isn't being pulled on the left side all of the time.
They are beautiful! 17 hands is huge.
